The ride will traverse one and two lane, paved country roads and enjoy beautiful farmland views with mountain vistas. All rides begin and end in historic Lewisburg, voted 'THE COOLEST small town in America' for 2011 by Budget Travel magazine.
Last year we needed to change the routes due to road closures from the flood. This brought about the two loop format that we have chosen to keep. The loop format allows you to challenge yourself on some of the most beautiful roads in southern West Virginia yet still have an opportunity to change your mind if you decide the climbs are a bit more than you expected. The Green Loop has just over 3000ft of climbing, so make it a triple day to finish out with 107 miles and over 9000ft. We will not have the time limit this year. Whether you choose to ride the 19-mile Red Loop or finish the Triple Green, the ride will leave you tired but so proud of your accomplishment!
This year we have chosen to not be supported by sponsorship in order to keep the financial burden off of the local businesses. To keep the costs low, we will not have t-shirts this year. Everyone will receive a water bottle and swag bag at registration. Additional water bottles can be purchased for $5 each.
The Wheels of Hope Ride, hosted by the Greenbrier Valley Bicycle Club, was created in 2005 as the result of a difficult journey of one of our fellow club members, a local cancer survivor. The proceeds will go towards benefitting Greenbrier Valley residents who are currently fighting cancer through the club’s Gifting Program and will also be used for local projects established by the Greenbrier Valley Bicycle Club intended to promote safe, healthy activities and lifestyles through cycling.
The ride will begin and end at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Follow the signs for day-of registration and parking. Address: 400 Lee Street North, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
Packet pick-up and day-of registration will begin at 6:30 AM on Saturday, July 15th. Bagels and coffee will be available at sign-in.
We will have hot showers provided by WVSOM after your ride, then stay for the post-ride meal and after ride party between 2-5 PM.
If you plan to stay for the weekend, we will have a fun ride on Sunday leaving from the Greenbrier Valley Airport on WV Rt 219 just north of Lewisburg at 9 AM. The route is planned as an out and back covering about 32 miles and 3800ft of climbing. We will have snacks near the turn-around at a natural spring where you can stop and refresh for the return ride.
